Which ServiceNow certification should you get first?
There are 20+ ServiceNow certifications. This guide tells you which one to start with based on your current role, where the job market is heading, and what the CIS-DF mandate means for your timeline.
The four entry points
Every ServiceNow certification path starts at one of four places. Your background determines which one makes sense.
CSA (Certified System Administrator)
For people who configure ServiceNow. You build forms, workflows, business rules, and user interfaces. You manage the platform day to day. CSA is the most common starting point and the one most job postings reference. Average salary: $118,000-$119,000.
CAD (Certified Application Developer)
For people who build applications on the platform. You write scripts, create scoped apps, design data models, and work with the ServiceNow API. CAD focuses on development rather than administration. Average salary: $122,000-$130,000.
CIS-DF (CIS Data Foundations)
For people who already work with CMDB, CSDM, or data quality in ServiceNow. CIS-DF has no prerequisites and is now mandatory for 7 other CIS certifications. If you plan to pursue any CIS cert in the ITSM, ITOM, ITAM, or SecOps tracks, start here. The first attempt is free through June 30, 2026.
CPOA (Certified Platform Owner Associate)
For managers and business stakeholders who own the ServiceNow platform but do not configure it. CPOA covers governance, demand management, and platform strategy. No technical prerequisite. Recommended for people with 3-5 years of ServiceNow experience in a leadership role.
Orange path requires CIS-DF. Gray path goes directly from CSA.
None of these four require another certification first. CSA is recommended for most CIS exams, but it is not a hard prerequisite. You can take CIS-DF, CIS-CSM, or CIS-HRSD without holding CSA. The full prerequisite table is in the certification landscape reference.
How to decide: a flowchart in plain text
Answer these questions in order. The first one that applies to you is your starting cert.
Do you already hold CIS-ITSM, CIS-Discovery, CIS-HAM, CIS-SAM, CIS-Service Mapping, CIS-SIR, or CIS-VR?
Start with CIS-DF immediately. You must pass it by December 31, 2026 or your existing certification expires. The first attempt is free through June 2026. Do not wait.
Do you plan to get any of those seven CIS certs in the next 12 months?
Start with CIS-DF. It is a hard prerequisite. You cannot register for any of those seven exams without CIS-DF. Take advantage of the free first attempt before June 30, 2026, then move to your target CIS cert.
Are you new to ServiceNow and want to get hired as an admin or consultant?
Start with CSA. It is the baseline credential that appears in nearly every job posting. LinkedIn shows 14,000+ ServiceNow jobs in the US. Almost all of them mention CSA. Once you have CSA, pick a CIS specialization based on where you want your career to go.
Are you a developer who builds apps and writes scripts on the platform?
Start with CAD. It validates your development skills specifically. Many employers value CAD alongside CSA, so consider getting both. CAD-certified developers earn $122,000-$130,000 on average.
Are you a ServiceNow platform owner, product owner, or IT manager?
Start with CPOA. It is designed for the business side of platform ownership. No coding required. If you plan to move toward CPOP (the professional-level version, currently in beta), CPOA is the prerequisite.
If none of these fit perfectly, default to CSA. It has the broadest recognition and opens the most doors.
Not sure which cert matches your background? The certification recommendation quiz asks 5 questions about your role and experience, then suggests a starting point. Takes 2 minutes.

Your first certification opens a track. Here is what each track looks like and where each course page is.
The admin track (starting from CSA)
CSA gives you the platform fundamentals. From there, the most common next step is a CIS certification in the module you work with most. The "ITSM plus one" trend is real: hiring managers want ITSM experience combined with at least one specialization. EY's Technical Architect put it bluntly: "They are not hiring anyone who has only ITSM experience. They are hiring someone who has ITSM plus one."
- CIS-ITSM (most common next step, requires CIS-DF first)
- CIS-CSM (customer service management, no CIS-DF needed)
- CIS-HRSD (HR service delivery, growing demand)
- CIS-GRC/IRM (governance, risk, and compliance, fastest-growing track)
The data and infrastructure track (starting from CIS-DF)
CIS-DF unlocks the ITOM and ITAM specializations. If you work with CMDB, Discovery, or asset management, this is your path.
- CIS-Discovery (requires CIS-DF)
- CIS-Service Mapping (requires CIS-DF)
- CIS-HAM (hardware asset management, requires CIS-DF)
- CIS-SAM (software asset management, requires CIS-DF)
The security track (starting from CIS-DF)
Security certifications also require CIS-DF. SecOps is described as "a hot skill area because cyberattacks are getting more frequent." Fewer people hold these certs, which means less competition and higher rates.
- CIS-SIR (security incident response, requires CIS-DF)
- CIS-VR (vulnerability response, requires CIS-DF)
The developer track (starting from CAD)
After CAD, developers often add Performance Analytics or move toward architect-level credentials.
- CAS-PA (Performance Analytics specialist)
- CTA (Certified Technical Architect, requires CSA + CAD + 2 CIS certs)
Other specializations (no CIS-DF required)
These CIS certifications do not require CIS-DF and can be taken independently.
- CIS-FSM (field service management)
- CIS-SPM (strategic portfolio management)
- CIS-TPRM (third-party risk management)
- CIS-Event Management
The CIS-DF factor
CIS-DF changed the certification landscape more than any other single update. Seven CIS certifications now require it as a hard prerequisite. If you hold any of those seven, you must pass CIS-DF by December 31, 2026 or your certification expires. If that happens, you need to retake both CIS-DF and the original CIS exam.
The free first attempt runs through June 30, 2026. After that, the exam costs $450, with retakes at $225. If you are going to need CIS-DF at any point in the next two years, take it now while it is free.

Salary and demand by track
Salaries vary by certification level and specialization. These figures are US-based averages from Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, and Indeed as of early 2026.
| Certification | Avg salary (US) | Demand |
|---|---|---|
| CSA | $118K-$119K | Very high |
| CAD | $122K-$130K | High |
| CIS-ITSM | $103K-$131K | Very high |
| CIS-GRC/IRM | $125K-$160K | Fastest growing |
| CIS-SecOps (SIR/VR) | $125K-$160K | Growing fast |
| CIS-HRSD | $110K-$140K (est) | Growing |
| Architects (CTA/CMA) | $151K-$175K | High (elite) |
The fastest-growing tracks are GRC/IRM, SecOps, and HRSD. ServiceNow's security and risk business exceeded $1 billion in annual contract value in Q3 2025. The $7 billion Armis acquisition signals even more investment in the security direction. If you are choosing a specialization, these tracks have the least competition and the strongest tailwinds.

What it costs
All exams run through Pearson VUE. The old voucher system from Kryterion is gone. You now register and pay directly through ServiceNow University.
| Exam level | First attempt | Retake |
|---|---|---|
| CSA or CAD | $300 | $150 |
| Any CIS exam | $450 | $225 |
| CIS-DF (promotional) | Free until June 30, 2026 | $225 |
Training courses on ServiceNow University are now free for on-demand content. You no longer need to pay for courses before registering for an exam. That means your total cost to certify is just the exam fee itself.
Retake rules: 3-day wait between first and second attempt, 30-day wait between second and third, 6-month wait for any attempts after that.
Mistakes people make when choosing
Starting with a CIS cert when they have no platform experience. CIS exams assume you know how to navigate the platform, configure forms, and understand the data model. You can technically take a CIS exam without CSA, but the exam will feel much harder if you lack foundational knowledge. CSA or hands-on PDI time first.
Ignoring the CIS-DF requirement. People plan for CIS-ITSM or CIS-Discovery without realizing they need CIS-DF first. They discover this at registration time and lose weeks. Check the prerequisite table before you plan your timeline.
Collecting certifications without depth. Three CIS certs at surface level is worth less on the job market than one CIS cert with deep implementation experience. Employers hire for project delivery, not badge counts. Pick one specialization and go deep before broadening.
Waiting too long for CIS-DF. The free first attempt ends June 30, 2026. The deadline for existing cert holders is December 31, 2026. Both of these dates are closer than they feel. If CIS-DF is anywhere in your future plan, move it to now.
The recommendation
If you are new to ServiceNow: start with CSA. It is the foundation of everything. Once you pass CSA, pick a CIS specialization based on the module you work with or the job market you want to enter. If that CIS cert requires CIS-DF, take CIS-DF while the free attempt is still available.
If you already have CSA and want to specialize: take CIS-DF now (free attempt), then your target CIS certification. The "ITSM plus one" pattern is what gets you hired. CIS-ITSM is the most common next step, but GRC/IRM and SecOps have less competition and are growing faster.
If you are a developer: start with CAD, then consider CSA as a complement. The combination of CAD + CSA positions you for architect-level roles down the line.
If you are a platform owner or manager: start with CPOA. It validates the governance and strategy skills that technical certifications do not cover.
Regardless of your path, use the certification recommendation quiz to confirm your starting point, and check the certification comparison table to see how your target cert compares to the others.
