Prerequisite chains
CIS-DF is the only hard prerequisite in the mainline certification path. Seven CIS certifications require it: ITSM, Discovery, HAM, SAM, Service Mapping, SIR, and VR. That list matters because other CIS certs (CSM, HRSD, FSM, SPM, TPRM, Event Management, GRC/IRM) are not affected.
CSA is recommended but not required for any mainline cert. It only becomes a hard prerequisite for expert-level certifications: CTA (requires CSA + CAD + any 2 CIS), ArchX/CAX (requires CSA + any 2 CIS), CMA (requires CSA + CAD + CIS-ITSM + 1 more CIS), and CRMA (requires CSA + ArchX + CIS-CSM or CIS-FSM).

New certifications for 2026
CRMA (Certified CRM Architect) registration opened March 4, 2026. It costs $4,000 and is limited to 50 candidates per cohort. CPOP beta launched in January 2026. No AI or GenAI certification has been announced despite heavy investment in Now Assist.
Pearson VUE transition
The migration from Kryterion/Webassessor to Pearson VUE completed on November 18, 2025. All ServiceNow exams now run exclusively through Pearson VUE, managed via ServiceNow University.
Key timeline: October 31, 2025 was the last day for Webassessor voucher claims. November 1 through 17 was the blackout window. November 18 was the Pearson VUE go-live date.

CIS-DF mandate
The free first attempt for CIS-DF is confirmed through June 30, 2026. There is no evidence of an extension. If your first attempt fails, the retake costs $225.
Existing holders of the 7 affected CIS certs (ITSM, Discovery, HAM, SAM, Service Mapping, SIR, VR) must pass CIS-DF by December 31, 2026. If they miss that deadline, their certifications expire. They would then need to retake both CIS-DF and the original CIS exam. This also puts higher-level credentials at risk, because CTA requires 2 active CIS certs.
Training courses are no longer mandatory to sit for any ServiceNow exam. That was confirmed in November 2025. As NowBen puts it: "if you have the knowledge, you can skip the course fees and go straight to the test."
The CIS-DF prerequisite enforcement was temporarily suspended through late January 2026. It is now fully enforced for all 7 affected certifications.

Demand tiers
- Tier 1 (Foundation): CSA (14,000+ US jobs on LinkedIn), CAD (2,000+ US developer jobs).
- Tier 2 (High demand): CIS-ITSM is described as "the prime" CIS cert. CIS-ITOM is consistently listed because "every company with ServiceNow needs CMDB populated."
- Tier 3 (Growing): CIS-GRC/IRM, CIS-SecOps, CIS-HRSD, CIS-CSM.
Fastest-growing tracks
GRC/IRM: Empiric calls it "one of the most in-demand modules right now." ServiceNow's security business exceeded $1B ACV in Q3 2025. The $7B Armis acquisition signals further investment in this space.
SecOps: A "hot skill area because cyberattacks are getting more frequent." SIR and VR certifications cover this track.
HRSD: ServiceNow is expanding into HR service delivery and creator workflows. Demand is growing but candidate supply is still low.
AI/GenAI: Now Assist is on pace for $500M ACV with a $1B target in 2026. AI agent consumption increased 55x. No certification exists yet for this track.

CPOA and CPOP
CPOA (Certified Professional Platform Owner Associate) is fully available as a mainline certification. There is no hard prerequisite. CSA is recommended, along with 3 to 5 years of platform experience.
CPOP (Certified Professional Platform Owner Professional) is still in beta as of March 2026. The beta exam launched on January 9, 2026. Registration was noted to be "due to close shortly" in February 2026. CPOA is a hard prerequisite for CPOP. It is expected to become a mainline certification soon.
