How to register for ServiceNow exams on Pearson VUE

A practical walkthrough of the entire Pearson VUE registration process for ServiceNow certification exams. Covers account setup, choosing between test center and online proctored delivery, scheduling, what to expect on exam day, and how retakes work.

Overview

Every ServiceNow certification exam runs through Pearson VUE. That includes the Certified System Administrator (CSA), Certified Application Developer (CAD), and every CIS specialization. There is no alternative testing vendor.

Pearson VUE offers two delivery methods. You can sit the exam at a physical test center, where a proctor monitors a room of candidates. Or you can take it online from home (or any private room), with a remote proctor watching through your webcam. Both options use the same question pool, the same time limits, and the same scoring.

The registration process itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes if you have your information ready. But small mistakes during setup can cause delays on exam day. Wrong name spellings lead to ID mismatches. Expired vouchers cannot be recovered. Online proctored sessions get cancelled when system checks fail five minutes before start time.

This guide walks through every step so you can avoid those problems. If you already know which ServiceNow certification you want to pursue, you can start the registration process today.

Step 1: Create your Pearson VUE account

Go to pearsonvue.com and search for "ServiceNow" in the test sponsor search bar. This takes you directly to the ServiceNow exam program page.

Click "Create account" and fill in your personal details. Pay close attention to these fields:

  • Name: Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your government-issued photo ID. If your ID says "Lukasz" and you type "Luke," the test center may refuse to admit you. Pearson VUE requires an exact match.
  • Email address: Use the same email address that is linked to your Now Learning account (nowlearning.servicenow.com). This is how ServiceNow connects your exam results to your certification profile. If the emails do not match, your pass result may not appear in Now Learning, and you will need to contact ServiceNow support to resolve it manually.
  • Address: Enter your current address. This determines which test centers appear in your search results and which online proctoring rules apply to your region.

After creating your account, you will receive a confirmation email. Verify it. Then log in and make sure your dashboard shows ServiceNow as your selected test program.

If you already have a Pearson VUE account from a different certification program (Microsoft, Cisco, or others), you still need to add ServiceNow as a test sponsor within your existing account. One Pearson VUE account can hold multiple test programs.

Step 2: Choose your exam

Once you are logged into Pearson VUE with ServiceNow selected as the test sponsor, you will see a list of available exams. Each exam has a name and a code. The ones you are most likely looking for:

Exam Target role Fee
CSA (Certified System Administrator) Platform administrators $300
CAD (Certified Application Developer) Developers building on the platform $300
CIS-DF (Data Foundations) CMDB and CSDM specialists Free*
CIS-ITSM (IT Service Management) ITSM implementers $450
Other CIS specializations CSM, HAM, HRSD, GRC, and more $450

*CIS-DF first attempts are free through June 30, 2026 as part of ServiceNow's mandate rollout. More on that in the scheduling section.

If you are not sure which exam to take first, the certification recommendation quiz can help you decide based on your current role and experience. For a broader view of how certifications connect to each other, read the certification path guide.

Select your exam from the list. Pearson VUE will then ask you to choose a delivery method.

Step 3: Test center vs. online proctored

This is the decision that causes the most second-guessing. Both options are valid. Here is what actually matters for each.

Test center

You walk into a Pearson VUE testing facility, show your ID, lock your belongings in a locker, and sit at a provided workstation. A proctor monitors the room. Other candidates may be taking different exams beside you.

Advantages of the test center:

  • Stable environment. You will never lose your exam because your home internet dropped. The test center's hardware and network are Pearson VUE's responsibility.
  • No setup hassle. You do not need to clear your desk, hide your bookshelf, or worry about someone walking into the room.
  • Immediate technical support. If the screen freezes or the software crashes, a proctor is right there to restart the system without losing your progress.
  • Mental separation. Being in a dedicated exam space puts you in test mode. No temptation to check your phone, no distractions from household noise.

Disadvantages:

  • You need to travel to the center, which may be 30 minutes away or 3 hours away depending on where you live.
  • Available time slots depend on the center's schedule. Popular centers book up fast, especially on weekends.
  • Some candidates find the shared room distracting. You can hear other people typing and clicking.

Online proctored (OnVUE)

You take the exam from your own computer in a private room. A remote proctor watches you through your webcam and listens through your microphone for the entire exam session.

Requirements for online proctored exams:

  • Private room with a closed door. No other people can enter during the exam. If someone walks in, the proctor may pause or terminate your session.
  • Clean desk. Remove all papers, books, sticky notes, and extra devices. The proctor will ask you to show your desk surface and surroundings via webcam before the exam starts.
  • Single monitor only. If you have a dual-monitor setup, disconnect or turn off the second monitor before starting.
  • Working webcam and microphone. Built-in laptop hardware works. External webcams work too.
  • Stable internet connection. Pearson VUE recommends at least 3 Mbps upload and download. Wired connections are more reliable than Wi-Fi.
  • OnVUE application installed. Download and install it from Pearson VUE's website before exam day. Run the system test at least 24 hours in advance.

Advantages of online proctored:

  • No travel time. You can schedule from anywhere.
  • More flexible time slots, including early mornings and late evenings.
  • Comfortable in your own space.

Disadvantages:

  • If your internet drops during the exam, you may lose your session. Pearson VUE has a reconnection window, but it does not always work.
  • The check-in process takes 15 to 30 minutes. You need to photograph your ID and room using the OnVUE app, then wait for a proctor to review the images and admit you.
  • Any rule violation (looking away from the screen too long, mumbling questions aloud, someone entering the room) can result in a terminated exam and forfeited fee.

My recommendation: if a test center is within reasonable driving distance, use it. The fewer variables you control, the fewer things can go wrong. But if your nearest center is hours away or fully booked, online proctored works fine as long as you follow the setup requirements exactly.

Before you register for any ServiceNow exam, make sure your preparation is solid. Practice tests simulate the real exam format and help you identify weak areas before you spend $300 or $450 on an attempt.

Lucky X offers practice tests for CSA, CAD, CIS-DF, CIS-ITSM, and other CIS specializations. Every question includes per-option explanations sourced from official ServiceNow documentation.

Step 4: Schedule and pay

After choosing your delivery method, Pearson VUE shows you available dates and times. Here is what to know about scheduling.

Exam fees

  • CSA and CAD: $300 per attempt
  • All CIS exams: $450 per attempt
  • CIS-DF first attempt: Free through June 30, 2026 (ServiceNow provides a voucher through Now Learning)

The full certification cost breakdown covers fees for every ServiceNow exam, including retake pricing and voucher details.

If you are taking CIS-DF for free, you will need to redeem a voucher through Now Learning before registering on Pearson VUE. Log into nowlearning.servicenow.com, navigate to the CIS-DF exam page, and follow the instructions to generate your free voucher code. Then enter that code during checkout on Pearson VUE.

If you are affected by the CIS-DF mandate and hold one of the seven dependent certifications, you should use this free attempt before it expires. After June 30, the exam costs $450.

Scheduling tips

  • Book 1 to 2 weeks in advance for test centers. Weekend slots and evening slots fill up first. Weekday mornings tend to have more availability.
  • Online proctored slots are available almost any time, including weekends. You can often book with just 24 hours notice.
  • Avoid scheduling too close to a deadline. If something goes wrong (illness, tech failure, ID mismatch), you need time to reschedule. Booking your exam for June 28 when the free voucher expires June 30 leaves almost no buffer.
  • Check your calendar for the next two weeks after your exam date. If you fail, you need to wait at least 14 days before retaking. Make sure that 14-day window does not land on a vacation or work crunch.

Payment methods include credit card, debit card, and voucher codes. Pearson VUE does not accept PayPal directly. Your employer may provide vouchers as part of a training program. Check with your manager or L&D team before paying out of pocket.

Exam day

Whether you chose test center or online, exam day follows a similar structure. Here is what to expect.

What to bring (test center)

  • Government-issued photo ID. Passport, driver's license, or national ID card. The name on the ID must match the name on your Pearson VUE account exactly. Expired IDs are not accepted.
  • Confirmation email (optional but recommended). Having your appointment number on your phone makes check-in faster.

What you cannot bring into the exam room:

  • Phone, smartwatch, or any electronic device
  • Notes, books, or study materials
  • Food or drinks (water is sometimes allowed depending on the center)
  • Jacket with large pockets (some centers require you to remove outerwear)

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. The check-in process includes ID verification, a digital photo, and sometimes a palm vein scan. If you arrive late, you may forfeit your appointment and fee.

Online proctored check-in

Start the OnVUE application 30 minutes before your scheduled time. The app will guide you through:

  1. A system test (internet speed, webcam, microphone, screen resolution)
  2. Photographing your government-issued ID with your phone or webcam
  3. Photographing your workspace from four angles (front, back, left, right)
  4. Waiting for a proctor to review your photos and admit you

The proctor may ask you to move objects, show under your desk, or turn your phone screen-down and place it out of reach. Follow every instruction. Arguing or refusing causes delays and can result in a cancelled session.

During the exam

Once the exam starts, you will see one question at a time. The timer runs in the top corner. For CSA and CIS-DF, you get 90 minutes for approximately 60 questions. That gives you roughly 90 seconds per question.

You can flag questions for review and return to them before submitting. Once you click "Submit exam," you cannot go back.

If you need a break at a test center, raise your hand. The proctor will pause your timer and escort you out. Online proctored exams do not allow breaks. Leaving your seat or covering your webcam will trigger a warning.

Read the exam study strategies guide for tips on managing your time during the actual test.

Getting your results

Your result appears on screen the moment you submit the exam. You will see either "Pass" or "Fail." That is it. ServiceNow does not provide a numerical score or a domain-by-domain breakdown.

This means you cannot see which specific domains you were weak in. If you fail, you only know that your total score fell below the passing threshold. ServiceNow uses scaled scoring, and the exact passing percentage is not publicly disclosed. The threshold varies by exam form and is not always the same percentage.

Official results appear in your Now Learning profile within 24 to 48 hours. Log into nowlearning.servicenow.com, go to "My Achievements," and you will see your certification listed there. You can download a digital badge and share it on LinkedIn.

Pearson VUE also stores your result in your account dashboard under "Score Reports." Keep this as a backup record.

If you passed: congratulations. If your certification requires CIS-DF as a prerequisite, your pass result will automatically unlock the ability to register for the dependent exam. Check the certification path guide for what to pursue next.

Rescheduling and retakes

Rescheduling

You can reschedule your exam through Pearson VUE's website at no extra cost, as long as you do it within the allowed window. The current policy requires you to reschedule at least 24 hours before your appointment for online proctored exams, and at least 48 hours before for test center exams.

If you reschedule inside that window (or simply do not show up), you forfeit your exam fee. No exceptions, no refunds.

To reschedule: log into your Pearson VUE account, find your appointment, click "Reschedule," and pick a new date.

Retake policy

If you fail, you must wait at least 14 days before attempting the same exam again. This is a ServiceNow policy enforced through Pearson VUE. You cannot schedule a retake for day 13.

Retake fees:

  • CSA and CAD retakes: $150
  • CIS exam retakes: $225

These reduced retake fees apply to your second and subsequent attempts. Each retake requires a new registration and payment through Pearson VUE.

If you used the free CIS-DF voucher for your first attempt and failed, your retake costs $225. That free voucher only covers one attempt. This is why preparation matters. The free study resources guide lists every no-cost option available, and combining free resources with a structured practice test gives you the best chance of passing on your first try.

There is no limit on how many times you can retake an exam, but the 14-day wait and retake fee apply each time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use scratch paper during the exam?

At a test center, yes. The proctor provides a small whiteboard or laminated sheet with a marker. You cannot bring your own paper. Online proctored exams do not allow scratch paper. You can use the built-in notepad tool within the OnVUE application if one is available, but do not count on it for complex calculations.

Can I go back to previous questions?

Yes. You can flag any question during the exam and revisit flagged questions before submitting. You can also navigate backward and forward through questions freely. Once you click "Submit exam," all answers are final.

What if my internet drops during an online proctored exam?

The OnVUE application has a built-in reconnection window. If your connection drops briefly (under 2 to 3 minutes), the app will attempt to reconnect and resume your session. Your timer continues running during the outage. If the disconnect lasts longer, the proctor may terminate the session. In that case, you need to contact Pearson VUE customer support to request a retake voucher. Pearson VUE does grant retakes for verified technical issues, but the process takes several business days.

How long is an exam voucher valid?

Standard vouchers purchased through Pearson VUE are typically valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. Employer-provided vouchers may have different expiration dates set by the purchasing organization. The free CIS-DF voucher expires June 30, 2026 regardless of when you redeemed it. Always check the expiration date in your Pearson VUE account before scheduling.

Can I take the exam in a language other than English?

ServiceNow certification exams are only available in English. There is no option for translated question sets. If English is not your first language, factor in extra time for reading comprehension when planning your exam pace.

What happens if the test center has a problem on exam day?

If the test center's systems go down or there is a facility issue (power outage, software crash), the center will reschedule your appointment at no cost. This is rare, but it does happen. Keep your confirmation email and appointment number available so you can reference them when rebooking.

Do I need to complete any training before registering?

For CSA and CAD, there are no mandatory prerequisites. You can register and sit the exam whenever you feel ready. For CIS specializations, ServiceNow recommends holding a CSA certification first. CIS-DF is now a mandatory prerequisite for seven CIS exams (ITSM, Discovery, HAM, SAM, Service Mapping, SIR, and VR). Check the CIS-DF mandate guide for the full list and deadlines.

If you are planning to take CIS-DF, your first attempt is free through June 30, 2026. After that date, the exam costs $450, and retakes cost $225. The free window is closing.

The Lucky X CIS-DF practice test covers all five exam domains with 470 questions and per-option explanations sourced from official Zurich documentation. At $9.99, it costs less than 5% of a single retake fee.
